Dear Members of the St. Andrew's Community,
At the end of this week we shall gather in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church as one community to
celebrate the accomplishments of the 2010-2011 school year at St. Andrew's. In particular, we will
reflect on the achievements and milestones of our 163 promoted students in Grades PK through 7 and
of our three graduating students in Grade 8.
But before we gaze through the rear view mirror, rightfully considering the impact of our 175 school
days together this year, I ask for your indulgence in looking forward, of taking a glimpse into what the
2011-2012 school year may hold.
I begin with the message of continued growth for St. Andrew's Episcopal School. Our growth of late
has not been wanton or fueled by the ambition of growth solely for growth itself. Rather, we have
tactically responded to the desire for continuity from our parent body (over 90% of whom have elected
to re-enroll at St. Andrew's over the past two years) and to an unmistakable demand in the New
Orleans community for a top-quality education for children in an intimate and nurturing environment.
I am pleased to report that continued enrollment growth is projected for next year, when the School is
slated to reach historic enrollment levels of 180 students or more. With the addition of nearly 40
students in just two years (enrollment was 142 for 2009-2010), the St. Andrew's community is
fulfilling its promise of the Middle School concept, which was formally introduced to this community
less than five years ago.
In response to this rapid enrollment increase, I am pleased to announce the following School staffing
enhancements for 2011-2012:
Full-Time Associate Faculty in Grades PK-4: For the first time in School history, every student in
Grades PK-4 will benefit from full-time instruction from two qualified homeroom instructors. For
years, the School has employed some part-time and some full-time "Assistant Teachers" in homeroom
classrooms. For 2011-2012 and beyond, St. Andrew's is employing only full-time homeroom
instructors, with one Lead Teacher and one Associate Teacher in every classroom in Grades PK-4.
We are replacing the term "Assistant Teacher" with "Associate Teacher" to reflect the growth in time
commitment and full professional engagement of the second homeroom teacher in every classroom.
This change supports the School's commitment to team teaching, which has demonstrated pedagogical,
social, and emotional benefits for young children. Team teaching enhances student and faculty
cooperation, instructional flexibility, and small-group work, all essential ingredients to helping our
students succeed in the 21
st
Century.
New Middle School Positions: The size of our Middle School is growing at a rate that must exceed
the highest expectations of those School leaders who launched the program just five years ago. From
just sixteen students in 2009-2010 to an anticipated fifty students in 2011-2012 (and with just five
graduates anticipated in 2012, foretelling continued growth for the future), the Middle School has
become a permanent, viable, and enriching fixture of the St. Andrew's community.

In response to this growth, and as a means of creating much-needed flexibility within our Middle
School curriculum and schedule, the School is adding two new part-time positions for 2011-2012 and
beyond.
The first position is an Associate Spanish Teacher for Grades 7 and 8. Students in Grades PK-6 will
continue to receive regular Spanish instruction from longtime St. Andrew's Spanish instructor Liz
Frischhertz. Beginning in Grade 7, students will have the option of pursuing Mandarin Chinese with
Chinese instructor Qing Yang or continuing Spanish instruction with new Associate Spanish Teacher
Beth Nazar.
Mrs. Nazar comes to St. Andrew's following an accomplished career of Spanish instruction and
tutoring at the Middle School, High School, and adult levels. A graduate of Newman High School,
Tufts University (B.A., Major in International Relations and Minor in Latin American Studies), and the
University of New Orleans (M.A., Romance Languages: Spanish Linguistics and Culture), Mrs. Nazar
has been a freelance Spanish tutor and translator here in New Orleans, has served as the Coordinator of
the Intensive English Language Program at UNO, and was the Assistant Dean at Lincoln University
College in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The second new position at St. Andrew's is an Associate PE Teacher. As a means of continuing to
develop our Athletic Program and to fulfill our commitment to offering first-rate instruction in a
nurturing environment with a limited number of students, we are pleased to expand the size of our
Athletic Department staff through this new position.
Patty Strikmiller, our new Associate PE Teacher, comes to St. Andrew's after conducting over
twenty years of Health Promotion Research for Elementary and Middle Schools at LSU and Tulane
University. She has co-authored fourteen publications in peer-reviewed journals and has conducted
numerous local and national training workshops for PE Teachers. In addition to her significant
research and training experience, Mrs. Strikmiller has previously served as an Elementary PE Teacher
and Coach at Family Christian Academy in Baton Rouge and at the Academy of the Sacred Heart here
in New Orleans. She holds a B.S. in Physical Education from UNO and an M.S. in Physical Education
from LSU.
In addition to further lowering the School's already impressive student:teacher ratios, the addition of
these two new positions greatly enhances the School's ability to offer an age-appropriate and flexible
curriculum and schedule for all of our students. For the first time in School history, the School can
offer three foreign language classes and two PE classes simultaneously, greatly improving the schedule
and curriculum for all students and faculty.
Increased Middle School Academic Specialization: I am also pleased to announce that, as a means
of enhancing the School's vertical curricular integration and providing greater academic focus and
high-school preparation in the core subjects of English and history, Allan Woodard will focus his
teaching solely on Grades 6-8 history and Nancy Jaynes will focus her teaching solely on Grades 6-8
English. Thus, for 2011-2012 and beyond, we will have full departmentalization of English, history,
and math in Grades 6-8 and of science in Grades 5-8.
With these exciting changes for 2011-2012 also comes the news of some bittersweet departures of St.
Andrew's faculty.

Bob Graves (4
th
Grade Teacher), Paige Hugg (Pre-Kindergarten Teacher), Carol Newman (Math
Department Chair and Teacher), Lesly Olavesen (Aftercare Assistant Teacher) and Renee Styzen
(Kindergarten Teacher) all leave St. Andrew's at the end of the school year to pursue new
opportunities in the field of education.
We thank Mr. Graves, Mrs. Hugg, Mrs. Newman, Mrs. Olavesen, and Mrs. Styzen for their
considerable service to St. Andrew's, and we wish them the very best in the years to come.
For our 4
th
Grade Associate Teacher position, I am pleased to welcome Kristin Rich into the St.
Andrew's community. Mrs. Rich has taught Pre-Kindergarten, First, and Fourth Grades at Trinity
Episcopal School here in New Orleans. She holds a B.A. in Elementary Education from Our Lady of
Holy Cross College, and she has served as an Aquatics instructor at Elmwood Fitness Center for five
years. She even helped to launch a Middle School Swimming Program at Trinity this past year,
something we hope to replicate here at St. Andrew's next year.
St. Andrew's is in the final stages of hiring new faculty for the positions of Pre-Kindergarten Associate
Teacher, Kindergarten Associate Teacher, Aftercare Assistant Teacher, and Math Department Chair
and Teacher. We have once again been blessed with and inundated by a high volume of qualified and
eager applicants who wish to join the St. Andrew's community. In my July "Back to School" Letter, I
will formally introduce the final four new members of the St. Andrew's teaching community.
As most of you know, our Development Coordinator Natalie Treadway is expecting her first child
this summer. We are pleased to support Mrs. Treadway as she takes leave from St. Andrew's from July
through October. We wish her and her husband Jimmy every happiness in welcoming their child to the
world this summer, and we look forward to welcoming Mrs. Treadway back to School this fall.
I am pleased to announce that current parent Michelle Wuttke, who has ably served the School as
President of the Parents' Club, as Rock 'N' Bowl Auction Chair, and as Annual Giving Co-Chair, has
agreed to serve as our temporary Development Coordinator in Mrs. Treadway's absence. We look
forward to working with Mrs. Wuttke on the School's special events and fundraising goals this
summer and fall.
As anyone who has studied or experienced the effects of significant and rapid change knows, it can be
both an exhilarating and unnerving process. Consider all that the St. Andrew's community has
experienced in the past six years, starting with Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and continuing through the
changes and growth outlined here, and it is undeniable that this is a community that has been tested but
that has responded with vigor and with conviction to the mission of our school: "to educate the mind,
body and spirit of children by promoting academic excellence and social responsibility in a small,
nurturing environment which values faith, reason, and diversity."
As we "run through the tape" to complete the 2010-2011 school year, with an eye toward all that is
possible for 2011-2012 and beyond, I ask for each member of this community to support each other as
we navigate these changes, all while remaining focused on the children that we serve and on the
mission that has brought about such momentous challenges and success.
Yours,
Mason Lecky
Head of School
